Following Saturday’s awards night, the 26-year-old Croydon girl has equalled the career total of David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Oasis. Raye – whose real name is Rachel Keen – collected Artist, Album, Song and Songwriter of the year, as well as Best new artist and Best R&B act. Walking into the awards night she had already made history with a record-breaking seven nominations – beating the previous record of six Brit nominations in any single year held by Gorillaz, Craig David and Robbie Williams. Raye, who now lives in Streatham Hill but grew up in Croydon, burst into tears as she accepted the Album of the Year award on stage with her grandmother, Agatha Dawson-Amoah. She said: “My grandma is awake until 3am praying for me and my beautiful sisters. I love you so much.” Raye released her debut album, My 21st Century Blues, in February last year, following her Number One single, Escapism, with US rapper 070 Shake.
