Mural of young Lambeth boy unveiled on estate

A month-long mural festival has unveiled its first artwork in Lambeth.

Starting on Thursday, the London Mural Festival will feature street art at seven different housing estates in Lambeth, created by both homegrown and international artists.

Estates taking part, based across Oval, Clapham, Brixton, Streatham Hill and West Norwood, include the South Lambeth Estate, the Fenwick Estate, the Brighton Terrace Estate, the Streatham Hill Estate, the Notre Dame Estate, the Gaskell Street Estate and the Woodvale Estate.

The first mural, a portrait of a young Lambeth resident painted by Spanish artist Sebas Velasco, has been unveiled in Oval, on the South Lambeth Estate.

It takes its title, A Lasting Place, from a song by London rapper Loyle Carner. One hundred new murals are set to be put on display this month, adding to the 75 put up during the first edition of the festival in 2020.

The festival aims to celebrate street art with interactive installations, exhibitions, and more. It also promises a unique chance to see live art from iconic street artists in action across Lambeth and 14 other boroughs, centred around the theme Connection.

Lambeth council’s member for stronger communities, cllr Donatus Anyanwu, said: “We are delighted to be hosting this creative event which will bring colourful and engaging artwork into the heart of our communities.

“The first work has been completed in Lambeth and it’s really inspiring, something for all generations to enjoy, and I look forward to see more of the street art that will be produced over the next four weeks.”
