‘Carmageddon’ chaos continues as more roadworks wreak havoc on Streatham Wells LTN – Lib Dems - BrixtonBuzz
Description

Standstill struck Streatham again last night after fresh roadworks surfaced on the boundary roads of a new Low-Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN).

Temporary traffic lights were installed at the junction of Streatham High Road, Stanthorpe Road, and the A214, to allow roadworks by SGN.

The challenges to travel presented by these roadworks is yet another barrier to residents who have faced a series of major disruptions on their roads in recent weeks.

The Liberal Democrats say they are still waiting for a response from Lambeth Council to their letter asking for an evidence-led approach to the new LTN.

They asked the Council to publish data every two weeks on air quality, bus journey times, and school lateness following the Streatham Wells LTN implementation.

On Tuesday 12 December, motorists reported they had been stuck in traffic for over 100 minutes on Streatham High Road, which is just 1.8 miles long.

Bus services were left stranded, terminated early, and diverted onto other routes.

Commuters as far away as Nightingale Lane, Clapham Common, were told by TfL staff that they would have to wait more than 60 minutes for the next G1 service, due to the chaos on Streatham High Road.

In October, Thames Water roadworks on one of the LTN’s key boundary roads caused chaos. The Lib Dems wrote to Lambeth Council asking for LTN Penalty Charge Notices to be waived for 23rd-24th October, and the council agreed.

“Roadworks are always going to be inevitable, especially on the A23/Streatham High Road. It is simply not acceptable that Lambeth Labour wash their hands of any responsibility.

There must be a coordinated response between the council and contractors.”

“Residents lives have been thrown into absolute havoc over the past couple of months since the introduction of the Streatham Wells LTN, this must be addressed with urgency, and alterations must be made where necessary.”

“Public transport must always be a top priority and seeing busses backed up for hours and being diverted from their routes is clearly not acceptable, let alone the pollution being caused by stationary vehicles.”
