A senior member of the PSNI is being investigated for misconduct in connection with a social media post referring to the promotion of a London-based officer weeks after he was acquitted of murder.

Chief Inspector Andy George, the president of the National Black Police Association, made the comments after it emerged that London Metropolitan Police firearms officer Martyn Black was promoted to inspector after he was acquitted last October of the murder of Chris Kaba.

Campaigners have expressed “deep concern” over a review of police accountability launched in the wake of anger over the murder charge brought against the police officer who shot gang member Chris Kaba.

Groups including Inquest, Liberty and the Centre for Women’s Justice wrote to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper urging her not to change the threshold for an inquest conclusion of unlawful killing, or move against a key ruling on police misconduct proceedings.

Rapidly-growing chicken chain Wingstop has said it plans to open at least 20 new sites in the UK this year, creating hundreds of jobs.

The ambitious expansion plans come a month after Wingstop’s UK arm was taken over by a US private equity firm, for more than £400 million.

Wingstop UK said that at least 10 new locations will open in the first half of the year.

These will include dine-in restaurants in Swansea, Newcastle, Lakeside shopping centre in Essex, Streatham in south London and Cardigan Fields in Leeds.

A British aid worker spending Christmas in Gaza has said the generosity of the UK public is giving “hope” to families affected by the conflict in the Middle East.

An appeal by The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), a coalition of UK charities, has raised £37.5 million since launching in October to support those affected by the crisis in Gaza, Lebanon and the wider region.

The King and Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales are among those who have donated.

Frontline police are losing the confidence to use their full powers after lengthy prosecutions like the trial of the officer who shot Chris Kaba, the shadow home secretary has said.

Chris Philp told a policing conference in Westminster that if the Government does not bring in legal changes to give officers better protection he will bring proposals to Parliament himself.

A man and a woman have been charged with murder after a 49-year-old man was found dead following a house fire in south London.

Mayara Loiola Ataide, 34, and Gevaldo Tavares Dos Santos, 46, both of no fixed address, will appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court later on Wednesday.

They are also charged with two counts of arson with intent to endanger life.
