Thanks to a community fundraising campaign, Streatham Common Co-Operative (SCCoop) successfully got the iconic Paddling Pool reopened for the school holidays early in August.

Generations of community

Streatham Common’s Paddling Pool has been a much-loved free community resource for generations. Since SCCoop took over the management of the pool from the council it has been funded mostly by the public. This year, when the local parents’ Facebook page reported that the pool couldn’t open – so many were prepared to donate, SCCoop couldn’t overlook the interest.

The council will introduce traffic restrictions on roads within the Streatham Wells LTN to turn traffic clogged roads into spaces where people can meet and socialise, as well as enjoy parklets among more trees and greenery that help protect against heat and flooding.

Part of the LTN trial will be a public consultation so those who live, work, or travel through the area can have their say on the scheme.

Lambeth Council is celebrating along with residents and community partners after Streatham Common secured a Green Flag Award for the first time.

The news is testament to the hard work and dedication of the partnership of the council staff, community partners and residents that care for it, allowing everybody to experience and enjoy this important public open space.

The council has acted swiftly to prevent further damage to the site after local people raised concerns and the operator, Zippo’s Circus, has been notified with immediate effect.

This action was taken after it was found that appropriate ground protection was not used to move equipment on the site, despite being needed due to the poor weather conditions.

This vital new scheme is in addition to wider measures TfL and Lambeth Council are taking across the borough as part of the Mayor’s Streetspace programme to enable safer walking and cycling during the coronavirus pandemic.

The changes proposed for Streatham Hill, which TfL will now start detailed design work on, include:

Nearly 2km of new, high quality segregated cycle lanes between Sternhold Avenue and Holmewood Road, making cycling much easier and safer on this busy stretch of road
