The Mere Scribbler - Exterior

Previously known as The WaterFront, The Mere Scribbler, a Pub now owned and managed by the Livelyhood Group, is located opposite Streatham Common, at the top of Greyhound Lane. With a new landlord in place, we thought it would be as good a time as any for a visit.

Atmosphere

On the outside, The Mere Scribbler, looks much like any other pub. Once inside however, the venue comes to life and impresses with its good natural light, dark wooden floor and leather seats juxtaposed with some interesting artwork and artefacts hanging from the walls. The layout of the pub is on the whole open plan with tables comfortably spaced out within this spacious venue providing a good balance of openness while at the same time remaining fairly intimate. This is complemented by a great view overlooking Streatham Common.

One of the first things you notice when entering the pub is that they are very sports orientated with a large TV screen viewable from almost every corner of the pub. They claim to show most of the big sporting events from Football and Tennis to Rugby and Cricket. Currently they are only open from Thursday to Sunday, but to coincide with the Doha 2022 World cup kicking off next week, are planning to be re-open 7 days a week.

The Mere Scribbler is popular with locals, as well as attracting an element of passing trade. During our short visit there seemed to have mixture of customers, some working away on their laptops while others appeared to be meeting friends and loved ones for a drink after work.

The Mere Scribbler also has a spacious beer garden with the promise of also showing sports there in the near future.

The Mere Scribbler has a relaxed but friendly service. We had pre-booked out table and when we arrived we were warmly received and quickly seated.

The Mere Scribbler is open until 12am on both Friday's and Saturday's. They have a few menus including a

  1. Saturday Brunch menu,

Main

The Mere Scribbler - Fish and Chips

The main menu offers a choice of sharing and small plates, mains, buns (burgers), sides and desserts each with a handful of choices. We ordered the following from the Monday to Saturday Dinner menu that was served together within a reasonable amount of time

  • Beer Battered Fish (Haddock) served with Mint Pea Puree and Thick Cut Chips - £16
  • The House Burger - Beef Patty, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickled Gherkin, and onion served with Rosemary Salt Fries  £15.50

For dessert we ordered:

  • Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with vanilla ice cream - £7.50
  • Classic Eton Mess -  £7.50

As you can see from the photos the food is well presented. We were also served in a fairly speedy manner. However I felt the food had some room for improvement. I personally found the burger to be a little over cooked for my liking. The sticky toffee pudding was served a little cold and the eton mess could have had more fruit and meringue but less cream. That said, the food was edible, but for the price I would personally expect a little better.

Apparently the menu changes fairly often so it is likely that there may be some changes here.

Drinks we ordered

  • Peckham Hell (Pint) - £6.00
  • Guiness (Pint) - £5.90
