Brixton’s popular Dogstar venue is up for sale, with Savills handling the listing - Brixton Buzz
Description

The closure of the iconic Dogstar venue in Coldharbour Lane in October 2024 was a hammer blow to the local night economy, although the venue had been woefully under-performing for some time.

After being briefly squatted within a week of its closure, the shutters went up and the entrance was boarded up in December 2024.

Since then, the Victorian building has predictably become a target for flyposters and taggers, and what was once a bustling part of the area has become a ghost town at night.

Estate agents Savills are now inviting offers “for the benefit of a new lease or alternatively for the freehold interest, subject to vacant possession.”

In their listing they say:

The substantial corner property is of brick construction under a flat roof.

The property, which located within the Brixton Conservation Area, is laid out to provide accommodation on basement, ground and two upper floor levels.

A roof terrace has been built but has not been in use as it still requires the necessary consents. To the rear of the property is a yard area.

Premises Licence

The property has the benefit of a Premises Licence which permits the sale of alcohol at the following times;

Monday-Wednesday – 11am-2.30am

Sunday – 12pm=2.30am

Thursday-Saturday – 11am-4am

Bizarrely, they insist that the Dogstar is ‘close to the Horse & Groom,’ when the nearest pub of that name is all the way up in Streatham.

Located on established leisure and hospitality pitch close to the Horse & Groom, Rosa’s Thai and Honest Burger

How much?

The listing only states, ‘price on application,’ with the rateable value being set at £101,000.

If we could afford it (we can’t!), we’d love to take it over as we’ve had a brilliant time running super successful nights there for 15 years, putting on live bands, DJs, cinema, poetry events and charity fundraisers.

Short of winning a mega lottery prize, the best we can hope for is that a company with a community minded ethos takes over this landmark Brixton institution and returns it to its glory days.
