Community group granted funding for projects to cut health inequality - South London News
Description

A community group has been granted council funding for 12 new community projects aimed at reducing health inequality in the area.

The Streatham Action Grant Scheme – funded by Public Health Lambeth – is a programme for people and voluntary organisations in Streatham with plans to support community well-being, particularly those focused on support for minority ethnic backgrounds, parents, carers and those struggling with mental health.

The 12 projects were chosen by a panel of Streatham-based representatives and were awarded between £250 and £2,500 depending on how the project would impact its target demographic.

Projects awarded funding included Carers4Carers, which will hold group well-being activities for unpaid carers and their families, New Vision for Women, which hosts weekly cooking sessions for female refugees, and Train Together London, which holds Friday night football sessions for Streatham men from ethnic minority communities.

Selected programmes which focused on mindfulness included My First 1,000 Days, which hosts meditation sessions for young black and minority ethnic carers, Maternal Journal, which has planned two day-long well-being retreats for Streatham mothers, and Menopause Warriors, which holds weekly meditation sessions for menopausal women.

A number of the funded projects also aimed to support those impacted by homelessness and economic inequality.

The Lunch Club provides fresh lunches to those with unstable access to food for themselves or their families, while Craft Forward will host a series of knitting and crochet workshops to contribute to their annual Blankets for London initiative, which donates handmade blankets to unhoused individuals.

Funded programmes will run throughout August.
