Streatham fire: Cleaner named as murder victim found in burnt out home as two charged with arson - The Mirror
Description

Police have charged two people with murder after a cleaner was found dead in a house fire.

Basilio Dos Santos Antonio, 49, was found lifeless inside the multi-occupied property in Streatham, South London last month. The London Fire Brigade rushed to the scene shortly after 7pm on Sunday, February 25.

Mayara Loiola Ataide, 34, and Gevaldo Tavares Dos Santos, 46, were charged with murder on Wednesday. They were also charged with two counts of arson with intent to endanger life.

The pair appeared in custody at the Old Bailey on March 1, where they were further remanded in custody. They are expected to attend a trial on January 2, 2025. Police say the fire was an isolated incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn, who is leading the investigation for the Met Police, said: “Basilio, who was originally from Brazil, had been in the UK for a number of years and worked as a cleaner. Our thoughts are with his family and friends as they continue to come to terms with their loss.”

She said in a statement last month: "The scene of the fire has undergone extensive forensic examination to help us understand how the fire started. We understand that such a tragic incident will cause concern among the wider community, however, we believe that this is an isolated incident and we have arranged for additional patrols in the area over the coming days to help provide reassurance."

Anyone who can help the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 5631/25Feb. Information can also be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
