Description

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that major works will start on the A23 Streatham Hill this summer, lasting until spring 2027. There will be widespread road closures and disruption.

Liberal Democrat Councillors for the area are calling for a meeting with TfL and a locally-based consultation.

Notices for works on what TfL calls a plan to “transform” the A23 between Sternhold Avenue and Holmewood Road have been published with a 21-day deadline for comment. They include closures to a number of roads.

The plans were first open to consultation in early 2020, just as Covid was hitting.

Now, five years later, TfL has decided to go ahead without real participation from locals, despite the debacle of the Streatham Wells LTN that happened in the interim.

The legal documents to commence the works were published on Friday, 28 March 2025, with responses due within 21 days of that date.

Liberal Democrat Councillors for the ward, Cllrs Donna Harris and Matthew Bryant, and the Leader of the Lib Dem Group on the London Assembly, Hina Bokhari AM are requesting a meeting and site visit with TfL.

They also want to see a consultation space on site that will allow members of the public to inspect the plans in person. With the original consultation happening five years ago, they are concerned that local people won’t know what is about to hit them.

Commenting, Cllr Donna Harris, Leader of the Lambeth Liberal Democrat Group, said:

“Streatham residents are fed up with being left out of decisions that directly impact their daily lives.

TfL has quietly posted a 21-day consultation on its website for highly disruptive works—but how many locals even know about it? It’s a disgrace.

Residents should have been properly informed, and a local venue should have been set up to answer questions, just as was done at Streatham Space Project half a decade ago.

Many residents will have come and gone without ever knowing this project was in the works. TfL and Lambeth Council must do better—consultations should be meaningful, not just a tick-box exercise.”
