Description

A 34-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died in a house fire in south London.

A 49-year-old man was found dead inside a multi-occupancy house in Glenister Park Road, Streatham, on Sunday evening.

The Met said the fire is thought to have been started deliberately and is being treated as suspicious.

The woman, who is in custody, was also arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, the Met said.

Officers were called to the scene at 19:07 GMT by the London Fire Brigade.

Further enquiries into the fire are taking place, and the man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported, the force said.

Det Ch Insp Kate Blackburn said: "We are in the early stages of our investigation, and we are working quickly to piece together the events last night in Glenister Park Road that sadly resulted in a man losing his life.

"Detectives have spent the day gathering footage from nearby doorbell cameras and other CCTV," she added.

"The scene of the fire has undergone extensive forensic examination to help us understand how the fire started."

She called for witnesses who saw any activity from 18:45 GMT on Sunday in Glenister Park Road, between Drakewood Road and Streatham Vale, to come forward.

"We understand that such a tragic incident will cause concern among the wider community, however we believe that this is an isolated incident and we have arranged for additional patrols in the area over the coming days to help provide reassurance," she added.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place in the coming days to establish the man's cause of death.
