Brixton: A tale of two chicken shops - Brixton Blog

As one Brixton chicken shop closes, another opens – although there are few similarities between them.

Other Side Fried – the only restaurant in the chain – reopened as Buster’s Hamburger Bar on 1 November after frying chicken on Atlantic Road since 2017.

Owners Matt Harris and Tommy Kempton began the brand from a van in 2014. They also own the small plates restaurant Ploussard in Clapham with its list of low intervention, biodynamic and natural wines.

Plan to close Brixton Post Office - Brixton Blog

Brixton is one of the 115 Post Offices threatened with closure under plans announced today (13 November) by the provider.

The company wants to get rid of Post Offices it owns directly and shift their functions into “partners” like W H Smith – which already houses Streatham’s Post Office.

The move is estimated to put 1,000 jobs at risk.

The plan comes as the Post Office is still under fire for the Horizon accounting scandal.

Lambeth council’s new private renting licensing scheme will soon apply to most of the borough.

The council’s cabinet has approved the extension of the “selective licensing scheme” which is designed to tackle rogue landlords and improve conditions for tenants in private rented accommodation.

It was launched in four wards earlier this year.

An enforcement plan will focus on “specific streets with high predicted issues”.

The council said an “educational approach” will be taken when dealing with non-compliance.

This year’s Remembrance Day ceremony in Brixton on Sunday (10 November) will be the first unified ceremony for several years. Previous years have seen two separate events.

The service, starting at 2pm, will take place at the African and Caribbean war memorial in Windrush Square and marks the 10th anniversary of its unveiling in the Black Cultural Archives three years before it was installed on the square, and the 110th year since the start of the First World War.

There was a 40 % increase in the number of pensioners receiving parcels compared to 2022/23.

A much anticipated and packed meeting to hear a joint Lambeth council and Metropolitan police plan to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in Brixton ended in disappointment last night (27 March).

Peter Impey, one of the founders of the grass roots residents’ organisation Action on ASB! (AOASB) which organised the meeting, told the full-capacity audience in St Matthew’s church opposite Lambeth town hall in Brixton: “We’ve worked so hard to try and get the police and the council to work together and this was not what we were expecting.”

Streatham LTN trial suspended – major work on A23 for buses, cyclists and pedestrians to follow - Brixton Blog

Lambeth council has suspended the controversial Streatham Wells low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) trial that was introduced in October last year.

It simultaneously announced work on a major project to update the A23/Streatham High Road for walking and cycling as well as a “comprehensive package of bus priority measures” that is due to start in late Spring, causing “some reduced road capacity” while it lasts.

The council said the scheme had “met our objectives to reduce traffic and road danger’”.
