Clapham & Brixton Hill MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy has launched a Christmas Card Competition today, inviting local school pupils to design her annual festive greeting card.

Bell is asking young people who live in Clapham & Brixton Hill or attend school in the constituency to submit an entry, which can be hand-drawn or designed using computer software.

Her chosen theme for this year’s festive card show is ‘Kindness in the Community’.

Lambeth’s new property licensing scheme is set to be rolled out across most of the borough after a successful launch in four wards earlier this year.

Councillors gave the green light for the extension of the “selective licensing scheme”, designed to tackle rogue landlords and improve conditions for people living in private rented accommodation, at a meeting this week.

It means the scheme will cover 23 of Lambeth’s 25 electoral wards, subject to approval from the Secretary of State for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

The annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run will be taking place this Sunday morning, and you’ll be able to see these wonderful vehicles driving through Brixton and Stockwell.

Cars will start to arrive in Hyde Park, on Serpentine Road close to Hyde Park Corner, from 6:00am on Sunday, with the first car off the line at 7:00am.

There’s two separate routes going through Lambeth:

Red route:

• Streatham, A23

• Thornton Heath, A23

Blue route:

• Vauxhall, A3036

Taking place every Wednesday afternoon in Streatham Library is a free drop-in centre offering advice to local residents struggling to pay their bills.

The library says:

Every Wednesday a cost-of-living link worker will be onsite, providing support to residents experiencing financial hardship or having issues related to their living costs.

It will include advice on maximising incomes, minimising costs, building financial resilience, and managing debt.

The Black Men’s Consortium will be hosting several performance events at Streatham Library, on Saturday, 26th October 2024.

There will two performances: 11.00am – 1.00pm and 2.00pm – 4.00pm

Join us as we premier three completely new productions. Firstly, we have, ‘The Night of Reckoning,’ created by Lloyd Curtis and devised by the BMC theatre company. Next up is ‘Farther,’ a piece by Seun Okewole. Finally, we have ‘What a Man’s Got To Do,’ by Fidel Asante.

Network Rail says that it’s modernising 1980s track and signalling on lines in the Peckham Rye, Tulse Hill and Crystal Palace areas, with the work promising a more reliable service with fewer delays.

They say that a lot of work has already been completed, with most of the new signalling equipment now installed, but to allow the new signalling to be finished, fully tested and then switched on, the following sections of the rail network will be closed from Saturday 26th October to Friday 1st November 2024:

At Wednesday’s full council meeting, Green Party councillors’ questions went unanswered as they highlighted peoples’ concerns that so many residents’ and workers’ voices were not being heard across the borough.

The Capital Programme for 2024-2028 report was discussed and Cllr Ainslie, Leader of the Green Group of councillors on the council, asked if Streatham was getting its fair share of development money.

He also pointed out the lack of detail on where the money is being spent, adding that the only location-specific projects were in the north and centre of the borough.

Taking place this Saturday 12th October, the Streatham Strut – a one-day musical festival running along the length of Streatham High Road – will feature 10 acts performing across 10 venues in 10 hours.

Admission to all events is free, so it’s a great way to hear a load of new bands and perhaps check out some new venues.
