The Southern trains cancelled, diverted or replaced by buses this weekend - News Shopper

The work will affect trains from September 21 (Saturday) through to September 22 (Sunday).

We have compiled all the details on these works so that you can plan your journey this weekend.

September 21 and 22 (Saturday and Sunday):

Engineering work is taking place between Peckham Rye and Streatham, closing all lines.

Buses will replace trains between London Bridge and Streatham Common via Peckham Rye.

Trains which usually run between London Bridge and East Croydon via Peckham Rye will only run between Streatham and East Croydon.

Person dies after being hit by train at Thornton Heath station

A casualty on the tracks was reported at the station in Brigstock Road just before 8.20pm yesterday (September 20).

Officers and London Ambulance Service crews were called to the scene.

The person was pronounced dead shortly after.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

All lines between Streatham and Selhurst were closed as the incident was dealt with but it has since reopened.

Train cancellations in south east London in half term week

No trains will run in parts of south east London during October half term - News Shopper

The upgrade work means that no trains will run on parts of the National Rail and London Overground from Saturday, October 26 through to Friday, November 1.

These upgraded signalling systems will be implemented between Crystal Palace, Tulse Hill and Peckham Rye.

The changes are part of a £400 million programme of investment in track and signalling upgrades that Network Rail is delivering in south London.

Previously, signalling updates have been implemented between East Croydon and London Victoria back in 2o22.

Ex Lambeth police station could become 57 room hotel

Ex-South London police station empty for nearly a decade could become hotel - News Shopper

The building at 101 Streatham High Road has been vacant since 2015 when the local police station relocated to a building further down the street.

Now Everitt Road Properties has applied to Lambeth Council to turn the former cop shop, built in 1912, into a hotel and café.

As part of the development, a rear extension would be added to the building, as well as a mansard roof.

According to a planning statement submitted as part of the application, Lambeth has been identified at a regional and national level as an area suitable for more hotels.

Missing Streatham teen has links to Lewisham

Gabriel is missing from his home in Streatham.

The 15-year-old is described as 5'9" tall, with a slim build and curly brown hair.

He has links to Lewisham.

The M&S stores in London offering the garlic bread scheme

Designed to reduce in-store food waste, at the end of each day, unsold loaves are prepared and filled with garlic butter by in-store bakery colleagues, before being frozen to extend shelf life by 40 days.

London customers can choose from a Garlic Baguette or Boule, San Francisco Sourdough Garlic Bread or West Country Cheddar and Red Leicester Garlic Cob.

The products have proved hugely popular with customers, with more than 1.4 million re-purposed loaves sold across M&S stores last year.

Charles Ezbon, 33, of Park Lane, Tottenham, pleaded guilty to possession of a loaded firearm and grievous bodily harm in March this year.

He was sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on June 19 to a minimum of nine years in jail.

Police attended North Middlesex hospital in the early hours of December 24 after being told a man had been admitted with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The 26-year-old’s injuries were later assessed as not life-threatening.

Lidl plans to open stores in Bromley, Bickley and Lewisham

The discount store, now the third largest supermarket in London, has published a list of more than 100 locations for potential new branches in London, with dozens in the south east - such as Orpington, Forest Hill, and two in Lewisham.

Across the UK, Lidl plans to open hundreds of new outlets, including in Bristol, Birmingham, and Berwick.

In London, new stores will also be opening in Wandsworth, Fulham, Hoxton, and Canning Town.

On Tuesday (April 29) we reported how Murphy - who held posts at churches in Sydenham, New Addington, South Croydon and Streatham – was jailed for 31 months for sexually abusing young boys in the 70s and 80s.

PC Helen French, who led the investigation, said: “I want to acknowledge the bravery of the victims, whose courage has been unwavering throughout this process.

“Coming forward is not only a tribute to their strength, but serves as a sign to any other victims that they will be listened to and supported.

Sydenham priest James Murphy jailed for historic sex abuse

Sydenham priest James Murphy jailed for historic sex abuse - News Shopper

Father James Finbar Murphy – who held posts at churches in Sydenham, New Addington, South Croydon and Streatham – abused boys as young as five years old.

In 2000 he was jailed for 30 months after he admitted abusing seven boys in south London - though the case’s investigating officer said this could be “just the tip of the iceberg”.

More victims then came forwards and Murphy, now aged 77, was convicted of seven counts of abuse against four more boys.
