Ice-hockey: Six-point haul helps Streatham soften blow of Britton Cup exit - South London News
Description

Streatham secured a six-point weekend in NIHL 1 South with a 3-1 win at Romford Buccaneers on Saturday followed by a 3-0 shutout success against Chelmsford Chieftains on Sunday, writes Chris Beal.

The RedHawks were battling a flu virus and it led to shortened benches.

Aidan Doughty, Ryan Watt and Ben Paynter got on the board for Streatham in Romford.

Sunday was revenge over the club which dumped them out of the Britton Cup earlier this month.

Streatham player-coach Ben Paynter said: “It was a good game.

“We obviously had a point to prove against them after the terrible game last week. I’m extremely pleased with how we played defensively, and to score a couple of goals on home ice felt great.

“We’ve got guys on this roster who are not 100 per cent at the moment and pushing through. And it’s an unbelievable feeling as a coach to have the boys push through the way they did.”

Chelmsford netminder Jordan Lawday saved with his chest from Ziggy Beesley and Danny Ingoldsby as the score stayed 0-0 heading into the third period.

It meant that Streatham had failed to score in eight periods of regulation play on home ice but Paynter ended that sequence as he fired into an open net from Ethan Lane’s drop pass.

With 42 minutes on the clock Ingoldsby found a gap to squeeze the puck by Lawday to make it 2-0.

Streatham’s Brendan Baird and Harvey Stead were penalised to give Chieftain’s a two-man advantage but Danny Milton made a series of big saves.

Ingoldsby converted a second after Chelmsford head coach Lewis Clifford had pulled Lawday for an extra attacker.

Up next for the RedHawks is another top of the table clash as Slough Jets visit on Sunday, facing off at 6.45pm.
