Ice-hockey: Streatham start 2025 with 12-0 drubbing of Oxford City Stars - South London News
Description

Streatham got the new year off to a winning start on Sunday evening by dishing out a 12-0 thrashing to the Oxford City Stars 12-0, writes Chris Beal.

The South Londoners have been in good form on home ice having won nine straight games at the High Road.

Oxford have not had much to celebrate on previous visits and in a season where they have only won four matches and lost 20, indicated it would be an uphill battle for the Stars.

RedHawks struck just two minutes in to open the scoring. Roman Cathcart and George Norcliffe set up Tomasz Skokan.

Oxford netminder Ross Miller endure an eight-minute barrage before conceding again. Damon Porter scored his first point for the club with an assist, setting up Norcliffe to make it 2-0.

Near the close of the first period Harvey Stead scored unassisted.

The ice continued to be tilted towards the Stars end from the beginning of the second period. And three minutes in Norcliffe landed another assist, helping Skokan to bag his second.

Barely 30 seconds passed before Ryan Watt and Ziggy Beesley set up JJ Pitchley.

Three minutes later the RedHawks struck again, Cathcart converted from a pass by Henry Aiken.

Miller made several impressive saves but Streatham added a seventh after 32 minutes through Sam Waller and Ryan Watt then scored.

The shot counter showcased just how dominant Streatham has been in the opening two periods, with just eight shots on Danny Milton in the Streatham net and 54 on Miller.

The Stars opted for a change of netminder in the third, Morgan Parsons swapping places with Miller.

But Ryan Watts took just 29 seconds to make it 9-0 and then Waller added his second of the game.

Having scored his first point as a Redhawk, Porter netted his first goal for the club at 46 minutes, with Danny Ingoldsby assisting the Canadia.

The scoring was wrapped up at 52 minutes. Watts’ pass released Ziggy Beesley, he dangled the puck around the last remaining Stars’ D man and fired it past Parsons.

Streatham head coach Ben Paynter said: “It was good to get our feet back under us, after two weeks off with the Christmas break.

“You never know how you’re going to fare after those two weeks off. But it was good to get a good skate in on Thursday in training and move into the game Sunday, with a comfortable 12-0 win.

“We did a lot of stuff the right way, got back to playing the right way and the way I want us to be playing consistently all year. It was good to see that didn’t change at a couple of goals up, and was good to start the new year on a positive”

Streatham welcome Invicta Dynamos for a Saturday night showdown (5.30pm).
